Inch Cape Offshore Wind Farm will use energy and marine consultancy ABL as marine warranty surveyor on the transport and installation campaigns for the construction of the 1.1 gigawatt project, located off the East coast of Scotland.

ABL will act as marine warranty surveyor for the full offshore wind farm construction, including the transport and installation of the wind turbine generators, jacket and monopile foundations, offshore substation platform, as well as export and inter-array cables.

Inch Cape is one of Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm projects and is set to play a significant role in supporting Scottish and the wider UK’s offshore wind targets. It will feature 72 turbines generating renewable energy that will be transported 85 kilometres to a new substation at Cockenzie, East Lothian, from where it will enter the national transmission system.

ABL’s office in Aberdeen, Scotland, will manage the project, supported by ABL’s offices in London and Newcastle, UK, and Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Ashley Perrett

“We will utilise our collective marine expertise from a huge amount of European offshore wind projects to deliver a high-quality service to the Inch Cape Offshore Wind Farm. We are delighted to be working on this large-scale renewable energy project,”

says Ashley Perrett, ABL’s Sub Regional Director of Northern Europe.

The marine warranty surveyor work will include review of all relevant documentation, vessel inspections and certification of components and vessel equipment.

ABL has been involved with the Inch Cape project since 2019, supporting the early phase planning and development, and is now continuing its support into the construction phase.

The installation of Inch Cape’s offshore substation platform will take place in late summer 2025 and the project is set for completion in 2027.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has recognised Aquafarm 2.0, developed by the water management consultants, Hidromod, as a very successful space-based agricultural project, which has been supported through ESA’s commercialisation gateway.

This acknowledgment highlights Aquafarm’s critical role in optimising water resources, improving crop management, and promoting sustainable agriculture through satellite technology and advanced environmental modelling.

Aquafarm is a cutting-edge digital twin platform (powered by Hidromod Aquasafe), integrating real-time data, including satellite data, with AI-driven analytics to create crystal-clear visualisations of water behaviours and forecasting in agricultural scenarios.

It is proven to enhance more accurate decision-making to drive a sustainable agriculture industry.

A Growing User Base of Agricultural and Water Management Leaders

Currently, Aquafarm 2.0 is used by key organizations worldwide, including:

  • IFAP (Instituto de Financiamento da Agricultura e Pescas, Portugal): Since 2021, IFAP uses AquaFarm to monitor crop declarations and validate agricultural subsidy claims across millions of parcels. The platform provides high-resolution satellite data and automated crop analysis, enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of CAP compliance and fund allocation.
  • DCCEEW (NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Australia): AquaFarm supported DCCEEW in piloting parcel-scale water balance and anomaly detection tools to monitor irrigation and catchment flows. Active user feedback helped refine the platform, which proved valuable for enhancing water governance in ungauged areas across New South Wales.
  • EDIA (Portugal’s Alqueva Development and Infrastructure Company, Portugal): EDIA leveraged AquaFarm for irrigated crop monitoring, reservoir inflow validation, and water management. Key technical users provided continuous feedback, helping refine the platform’s models and dashboards, and confirming AquaFarm’s value as a core tool for efficient water resource management in one of Europe’s largest irrigation systems.

ESA’s Continued Support for Space-Based Agricultural Solutions

ESA’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) program has played a crucial role in scaling Aquafarm’s success, demonstrating how Earth Observation (EO) data and AI-driven modelling can revolutionize agriculture, water management, and climate resilience.

With growing challenges in food security, water scarcity, and environmental sustainability, projects like Aquafarm 2.0 continue to shape the future of agriculture, proving the immense value of space technology in solving real-world problems.

ICOMIA appoints ABL on superyacht refit yard brief https://abl-group.com/abl/all-media/news/icomia-appoints-abl-on-superyacht-refit-yard-brief/ Mon, 07 Apr 2025 11:45:05 +0000 https://abl-group.com/abl/?p=124079 ABL Yachts has supported ICOMIA in the development of an updated risk assessment standard for superyacht refit yards.

The post ICOMIA appoints ABL on superyacht refit yard brief appeared first on ABL.

]]>

The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) appointed energy and marine consultancy ABL to develop an updated risk assessment standard aimed specifically at superyacht refit yards.

The new standard is based on the current JH143 standard for shipyard risk assessment.

ABL will draw upon knowledge from its expert JH143 and yacht specialist surveyors from different locations around the world, to ensure that the new standard will be fit for purpose, valuable to the industry and user-friendly for the surveyors.

The JH143 Shipyard risk assessment process was originally developed by ABL to assess risks at a shipyard, allowing underwriters to consider their exposure and to mitigate risks where possible.

“A superyacht refit shipyard is quite a different environment to a commercial yard and the risks are different. For example, overspray in a commercial yard may not be catastrophic, but overspray landing on a superyacht can result in a claim in the multiple millions.”

Adam Jackson, ABL’s Head of Yacht Services and Director of Marine Engineering for the UK

ABL Yachts, part of ABL, is a service provider to the insurance industry, yacht brokers, management companies and owners worldwide. ABL Yachts offers clients a large multi-disciplinary superyacht survey team with a collective experience measured in hundreds of years, combined with the support of one of the marine industry’s most experienced suppliers of consultancy services.

ABL is part of Oslo-listed consultancy group ABL Group ASA.

ABL Yachts: A legacy in superyacht consultancy and surveying

ABL Yachts is an independent and trusted partner in the surveying, engineering and technical consultancy for superyachts, with a legacy dating back to Braemar Yacht Services.

Combining heritage in the market, with in-house multidisciplined engineering and consultancy expertise, and extensive operational experience across maritime sectors, ABL Yachts provides technical support to mitigate risk and enhance performance throughout an asset’s design life.

Energy and marine consultancy ABL has supported INPEX with the successful lift installation of a Booster Compression Module (BCM) onto the operator’s central processing facility (CPF), Ichthys Explorer – part of Australia’s Ichthys LNG.

The landmark project involved the loadout, near shore transfer lift, marine transportation from Asia to Australia and the offshore installation of the 4,500 tonnes compression module onto the CPF.

abl gROUP eNERGY mANAGING dIRECTOR, aLEX hARRISON, ATTENDING ON-SITE.

The lift was conducted with the Sleipnir, a semi-submersible crane vessel (SSCV), operated by Heerema Marine Contractors, utilising one of her two massive 10,000 tonne capacity cranes.

The installation lift is one of, if not the, heaviest lift ever performed onto an already operating floating production unit.

“ABL has supported INPEX with its various development phases of the Ichthys Field for close to 15 years, and we were delighted to be asked to support them during this latest essential and complex development stage too. The installation of the BCM will help maintain the CPF’s production rates throughout its 40-year design life.”

Alex Harrison, ABL Group Managing Director for Energy

Due to the floating nature of the receiving platform, the project involved considerable work in the assessment of the pre-ballasted and post-installation inclinations of the CPF, and the effects of mooring stiffness on these inclinations. The project also involved significant work in the assessment of multi-body relative motions for the installation vessel and the CPF. These were to determine the installation loads, resulting limiting installation sea states, the design of the lift rigging which included some of the largest man-made fibre slings ever fabricated, and the design and installation of a novel bumper and guiding system.

“This has been one of the most interesting technical projects I have ever been involved with, and it was an honour to personally be the attending surveyor for the nearshore transfer, transportation and offshore lift operations. It will certainly go down as a true highlight of my 30 years in the industry.”
